Die Briefe Philipp Jakob Speners, des Begrunders des Pietismus, sind fur die Kirchen- und Kulturgeschichte Quellen allerersten Ranges. Sie gewahren Einblick in das Werden und die Ausbreitung der pietistischen Bewegung und sind daruber hinaus von einzigartigem Informationswert fur viele Gebiete des geistigen und gesellschaftlichen Lebens auch ausserhalb des religios-kirchlichen Raumes. Die edierten “Briefe aus der Berliner Zeit 1691-1705” dokumentieren Speners Lebensabschnitt als Propst an der Berliner Nikolai-Kirche. Briefe aus dem gleichen Zeitraum sind im “Briefwechsel mit Adam Rechenberg” ab Band 3 und im “Briefwechsel mit August Hermann Francke” veroffentlicht. Band 2 enthalt 212 Briefe aus den Jahren 1694-1696, die einen ersten Hohepunkt seiner Auseinandersetzungen mit den Gegnern des Pietismus spiegeln. Sie vermitteln Einblicke in die Entstehung und Rezeption seiner Streitschriften. In diesen geht es u.a. um den Streit uber den Chiliasmus und um den Vorwurf, Spener missachte die lutherischen Bekenntnisschriften. Zahlreiche Briefe verdeutlichen seinen Einfluss auf die personelle Entwicklung der theologischen Fakultaten in Halle und Giessen sowie auf die Besetzung wichtiger geistlicher Amter in Brandenburg.
