Although “education” is on everyone’s lips, it is not a classic term of theological teaching. The fact that “education” has nevertheless been of enormous importance for the Christian religion and other religions is demonstrated here by contributions from all disciplines of theology, complemented by different perspectives from educational science to Jewish studies, Islamic studies and Buddhist research.

The fact that “education” has nevertheless been of enormous importance for the Christian religion and other religions is demonstrated here by contributions from all disciplines of theology; from educational science to Jewish studies, Islamic studies and Buddhist research. German description: “Bildung” ist zwar in aller Munde, doch kein klassischer Begriff theologischer Lehre. Dennoch sind der Begriff und das Anliegen der “Bildung” fur die christliche Religion seit der Aufklarung unverzichtbar geworden. Ein Gang durch alle theologischen Disziplinen vom “Alten Testament” bis zur “Praktischen Theologie” zeigt, wie facettenreich und massgeblich “Bildung” aus der Tradition des Christentums heraus verstanden und gedeutet wurde. In der Erziehungswissenschaft ist daneben ein eigenstandiger Bildungsdiskurs gewachsen, der Kriterien, Horizonte und wissenschaftliche Fragestellungen freisetzt. Und nicht zuletzt finden sich Entsprechungen zur “Bildung” in den Sprachen und Reflexionstraditionen von Judentum, Islam und Buddhismus. So zeichnet der Band die Bedeutung von “Bildung” fur Religionen nach, lasst aber auch die bildende Kraft des Christentums und anderer Religionen, allen voran: des Judentums, erkennen. “Bildung” erweist sich als ein zu Unrecht vernachlassigtes Thema der Theologie.
