English summary: In a selection of ten masterworks from the Dresden State Art Collection, this volume opens up key scenes from the Old and New Testaments from the perspectives of art history and theology. This study introduces new points of access to artwork with biblical themes and enables them to be appreciated in their variable meanings as well as their meanings which are directly relevant today. For many years, the Johnite Aid Community of Dresden has offered a particular type of engagement with religious art. On the basis of the successful concept “Image and Message,” held since 1990 in Munich, theologians and art historians interpret carefully selected artworks together within the framework of a series of lectures to present biblical themes. This volume, which has grown out of these lectures, is composed of works such as “Moses on Mount Sinai” by Daniele da Volterra, “The Cure of the Blind,” by El Greco, or the “The Resurrection of Christ” by Paolo Veronese. Scholarly information is provided for each work of art, which provides the art history understanding of the work and on the basis of the relevant place in the Bible, the theological aspects and meaning are also highlighted for the reader. Thus the readers and viewers are offered a new, deepened appreciation for the masterworks of art.
