In der judischen Apokalyptik lasst sich ein zwar seltenes, aber klares Motiv verfolgen: der Berg bzw. die Berge als zu bezwingende Widersacher. Ein solches Motiv lasst sich schon in den altorientalischen Quellen beobachten, denen zufolge es mit Gottheiten und Konigen verbunden wurde. Das genannte Motiv wird in drei Werken – 1Hen (Bilderreden), 2Bar und 4Esra – im Rahmen der Beschreibung einer messianischen Gestalt mit der Intention verwendet, diese als aussergewohnlich darzustellen. Dabei sind alle drei Kontexte politisch konnotiert. In 2Bar und 1Hen reprasentieren die Berge eine politische Macht (in 2Bar zusammen mit dem Wald) bzw. ihre wirtschaftlich-militarische Grundlage. Der Vorlaufer dieses Motivs ist im Orakelspruch Sach 4,7 zu finden, das ebenfalls politisch konnotiert ist. Die spateren Apokalypsen haben das zunachst einfach gestaltete Motiv um Elemente einer Theophanieschilderung bzw. um Elemente der divine warrior-Motivik angereichert.
