This volume investigates the relationship between the temple of the Dioscuri (1st-2nd century AD) – the most important ancient building of Naples, admired and studied by humanists and antiquarians local and foreign even after its partial collapse in 1688 – and the church San Paolo Maggiore, built on the ruins of the temple in the Middle Ages and rebuilt by the Theatine order during the second half of the sixteenth century. The new church shared and mirrored the historical aura of the temple facade in its marble porch, thus establishing a close relationship between architecture and history, reflecting the problematic relationship between Christianity and antiquity, of which the Theatines served as interpreters.Testimonies by scholars from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, and the substantial archival sources documenting the rebuilding of the church allow us to witness the exemplary history of this exceptional monument situated between humanism and liturgy.

Italian text.
