Die enge Verbundenheit von Humanismus und Reformation lasst sich in keiner Region so gut beobachten wie am Oberrhein. Uber die Konzile von Konstanz und Basel hatten sich von hier im 15. Jahrhundert der italienische und der griechische Humanismus nach Mitteldeutschland aus-gebreitet. Die beiden sudwestdeutschen Humanisten Johannes Reuchlin aus Pforzheim und Philipp Melanchthon aus dem nahegelegenen Bretten belegen besonders eindrucklich, dass die Reformation ideen-geschichtlich wie personell in der europaischen Bildungsbewegung des Humanismus wurzelt. Die Pforzheimer Ausstellung knupft mit ihrem Titel an einen Strassburger Holzschnitt an, auf dem Reuchlin, Luther und Ulrich von Hutten 1521 programmatisch als “Patroni Libertatis” dargestellt sind. Der vorliegende Band dokumentiert die Stationen und zentralen Exponate der Ausstellung und enthalt die ausgearbeiteten Beitrage des 8. Internationalen Reuchlin-Kongresses vom Mai 2014.
