The department of ancient art in the Martin von Wagner Museum in Würzburg houses a most remarkable collection of twelve mummy masks that was donated by the private collector Friedrich Gütte. The major part of these masks comes from the Fayum area in Egypt and dates to the late Ptolemaic and early Roman epochs. This volume presents the masks which are kept in Würzburg for the first time in photographs alongside chapters explaining the cultural context: the religious significance of this object type for the ancient Egyptians, the dating and provenance through comparison with masks in other collections, and finally the mask’s iconographic programme.

In: Bibliotheca orientalis.

In: Kunstbuchanzeiger (12.01.2005)
http://www.kunstbuchanzeiger.de/de/themen/epochen/rezensionen/576/
