Une des principales difficultes du chercheur qui veut aborder l’histoire du Concile Vatican II, reside dans le risque que souvent l’arbre empeche de voir la foret. Une des merites du recueil de “collected essays” que Jan Grootaers vient de publier dans la Bibliotheca de la faculte de Theologie de Leuven est d’avoir t”che de structurer les chapitres de telle sorte que l’on s’efforce d’eclairer aussi bien la foret (les “Actes” de Vatican II) que les arbres (les “Acteurs” du Concile). Apres avoir cherche a presenter la diversite positive d’une immense assemblee, qui aurait pu sombrer dans son gigantisme, l’auteur analyse les “faces d’ombre” de l’evenement et certains de ses echecs. Parmi les acteurs on trouvera ici pour la premiere fois une galerie de portraits des grandes figures de Vatican II ainsi qu’une serie d’experts conciliaires qui ont oeuvre a la redaction de textes, qui toujours devaient etre “remis sur le metier”. En conclusion de la preface que le professeur Etienne Fouilloux a donne a cet ouvrage, l’historien de Lyon ecrit: “En se refusant a gommer les heurts, les oppositions, les remords, les volte-face a l’occasion, Jan Grootaers sert mieux l’histoire de Vatican II, conflictuelle et consensuelle tout a la fois, que des vulgates agressivement denonciatrices ou platement conformistes. Avec minutie, imagination et talent, il detruit certes quelques mythes, mais au benefice d’une vision moins legendaire et plus vraie de l’evenement majeur de la seconde moitie du XXe siecle que fut le dernier concile.”
