To mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the excavations at Tell Halaf, an international academic symposium was held in 2011 as part of the special exhibition at the Pergamon Museum “Die geretteten Gotter aus dem Palast vom Tell Halaf” (the gods retrieved from the palace of Tell Halaf). The corresponding conference proceedings record the region’s research history and the development from the Neolithic period to the end of the Ancient Near East in 17 individual contributions based on selected case studies.
English summary: To mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the excavations at Tell Halaf, an international academic symposium was held in 2011 as part of the special exhibition at the Pergamon Museum “Die geretteten Gotter aus dem Palast vom Tell Halaf” (the gods retrieved from the palace of Tell Halaf). The corresponding conference proceedings record the region’s research history and the development from the Neolithic period to the end of the Ancient Near East in 17 individual contributions based on selected case studies. Both the results achieved so far as well as still unanswered questions and future research perspectives are presented. In addition, the richly illustrated volume also shows how international teams of archaeologists and the Syrian Directorate-General for Antiquities and Museums have been cooperating very productively for many years. This close collaboration came to an end abruptly when violent clashes between government and opposition forces broke out in 2011. It is feared that the conflict, which has now developed into a full scale civil war, will not allow for on-site archaeological research to be continued for years to come. The results of the meeting should therefore not only be regarded as an interim report but will probably remain relevant and up to date for some time to come. German description: Anlasslich des 100. Jahrestages des Beginns der Ausgrabungen am Tell Halaf fand 2011 ein internationales wissenschaftliches Symposium im Rahmen der Sonderausstellung des Pergamonmuseums “Die geretteten Gotter aus dem Palast vom Tell Halaf” statt. In 17 Einzelbeitragen prasentiert der zugehorige Tagungsband die Forschungsgeschichte der Region und die Entwicklung vom Neolithikum bis zum Ende der altorientalischen Periode an ausgewahlten Referenzbeispielen. Es werden sowohl die bisher erzielten Ergebnisse vorgestellt als auch offene Fragen und kunftige Forschungsrichtungen aufgezeigt. Der reich illustrierte Band legt zugleich Zeugnis ab von der langjahrigen produktiven Zusammenarbeit internationaler Archaologenteams mit der syrischen Antikendirektion. Durch den Beginn der gewaltsamen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Regierung und oppositionellen Gruppen ist diese Kooperation 2011 jah unterbrochen worden. Es ist zu befurchten, dass der Konflikt, der sich inzwischen zu einem schrecklichen Burgerkrieg ausgeweitet hat, die nachsten Jahre keine Weiterfuhrung archaologischer Arbeiten vor Ort erlauben wird. So stellen die Ergebnisse der Tagung nicht nur eine Zwischenbilanz dar, sondern werden voraussichtlich fur langere Zeit von hoher Aktualitat bleiben.
