English Summary: The subject of the first symposium of the Max Freiherr von Oppenheim Foundation and of this anthology is the life’s work of the organization’s founder, in which – along with the archaeological excavations at Tell Halaf in northern Syria – the Bedouin of the Middle East play a central role. Kai Lammerhirt’s contribution takes us back to the very earliest phase of written testimony by camel-riding Arab Bedouin. Stefan Leder provides a comprehensive account of the social, political, economic and cultural aspects of Bedouin life in Arab societies from the Qur’anic period to the present day. Finally, Thomas Demmelhuber’s article looks at the countries of the Arabian Peninsula, that only attained statehood during the 20th century.
