For more than four decades, there were numerous connections between the „Bund der Deutschen Katholischen Jugend“ (BDKJ) and the catholic youth in the GDR. They included publicly known contacts as well as contacts that were more hidden from the public. The latter concerned in particular the area of material aid, which provided an important basis for the work of pastoral care for the catholic youth in the GDR.
Manfred Göbel has analyzed these connections, which are referred to as “partnership work”, and has also taken into account the relation between catholic youth and FDJ, the BDKJ’s position on the reunification between the two German states, and his acting in the final phase of the GDR.
For this work, the documents of the “Eastern Department”, which existed in the federal seat of the west German catholic youth, were evaluated for the first time. They are supplemented by an exemplary presentation of the partnership work between the dioceses of Mainz and Erfurt.
