A 36 ans, il n’a pas ete facile pour l’ecrivain catholique de servir comme officier dans l’armee britannique. Mais guerre ou pas, il reste le meme contempteur de l’univers qui l’entoure. L’entrainement des premiers jours ? ” De nombreux jeux degradants concus pour nous maintenir de bonne humeur mais qui, en realite, vont a l’encontre de la dignite naturelle de l’homme. ” Envoye d’une unite a l’autre, il participe a des operations militaires variees et insolites. D’abord, en 1940, l’expedition avortee de Dakar aux cotes des Francais libres menes par le general de Gaulle. Puis l’evacuation catastrophique de la Crete par l’armee britannique. Enfin, c’est une longue mission dans les Balkans avec l’improbable Randolph Churchill, fils du Premier Ministre, aupres de Tito et de ses Partisans durant laquelle les deux hommes survivent au crash de leur avion, un des nombreux episodes d’une relation tumultueuse. Entre deux departs, diners arroses en compagnie de l’establishment londonien dans la capitale ecrasee par les bombes, decrits avec le meme cynisme decapant. Durant ces cinq annees de guerre, Waugh poursuit, jour apres jour, sa critique insolente de la vie sociale britannique et de l’un de ses plus fiers fleurons, l’armee.
