By establishing a dialogue on the dual category of “children and madmen” in the work of Descartes, that of Foucault, and the objections of naturalists, this work seeks to find the missing piece in Descartes that brings together the Cogito, the “infant,” and the madman.

Review - French Les enfants et les fous designent une categorie qui inquiete la philosophie dans sa pretention a fonder la raison. Or Descartes definit l'homme par la pensee. Ce qui inclut, affirme-t-il, les enfants et les fous, qui sont tout autant hommes que les mathematiciens. Mais alors qu'est-ce que penser ? En faisant dialoguer autour de cette categorie double les enfants et les fous , l'oeuvre de Descartes et celle de Foucault ainsi que les objections d'ordre naturaliste, ce travail cherche a decouvrir chez Descartes la piece manquante, qui permette de tenir ensemble le Cogito, le nourrisson , et le fou dont Foucault pretend qu'il a ete exclu au seuil des Meditations, comme condition d ' impossibilite de la pensee.
