This volume focuses on a part of Egyptian culture that has not received much attention until now, which is the deification and worship of private persons. Signs of deification are, among others, a considerable duration over time of the cult of the dead, the deposit of votive offerings at the graves, and the baptism of deceased children. Such practices remind us, to a certain extent, or practices within Christianity; indeed, similar phenomena are to be found in different ways in many cultures and religions, indicating that this satisfies a universal religious need. German description: Die Vergottlichung von Privatpersonen behandelt einen bislang vernachlassigten Teilbereich der Agyptischen Kultur, die besondere Verehrung historischer Personlichkeiten. Kennzeichen der Vergottlichung sind u.a. eine uberdurchschnittlich lange Dauer des Totenkultes, das Deponieren von Votivgaben am Grab und die Taufe von Kindern nach dem Verstorbenen. Dies erinnert nicht von ungefahr etwa an die Heiligenverehrung im christlichen Glauben; tatsachlich sind Ahnliche Phanomene in unterschiedlicher Pragung in zahlreichen Kulturen und Religionen zu finden, was darauf hinweist, dass hiermit ein universelles religioses Bedurfnis befriedigt wird. Worin aber besteht dieses Bedurfnis? In Sabine KrAnmers Studie zur Erinnerungskultur im Alten Agypten werden auf der Grundlage einer umfangreichen Materialsammlung samtliche Zeugnisse wie Biographien, Kultstellen und die dort geweihten Votivgaben, die uber Leben und Verehrung der Verstorbenen Auskunft geben, vorgestellt und ausgewertet. Auf diese Weise lassen sich Antworten auf die folgenden Fragen finden: Wer waren diese Personen und warum wurden sie verehrt? Wer waren die Glaubigen und was erhofften sie sich? Wann begann die Verehrung der einzelnen Personen und wie lange hielt sie an? Dehnte sie sich uber die Kultstelle hinaus aus und falls ja, wie weit? Wie verlief die Entwicklung vom normalen Totenkult zur Verehrung als Gott?
