Le transhumanisme entend utiliser les technologies les plus sophistiquees pour augmenter les capacites humaines et repousser les limites naturelles. Cet avenement d’un homme nouveau, ameliore, auquel le decryptage du genome humain donne un elan sans precedent, souleve cependant bien des questions. Alors que les liberaux entrevoient deja pour l’espece humaine la perspective d’une evolution enfin controlee, le courant (bio)conservateur craint le retour d’un nouvel eugenisme. Une evaluation morale de cette nouvelle anthroptechnie materielle est donc plus que jamais necessaire. Car ce qui est en jeu, c’est non seulement le droit de disposer librement de son corps comme puissance indefiniment extensible (ainsi que le predisait Condorcet), mais aussi la possibilite inedite de reconfigurer le substrat genetique de l’enfant a naitre en tant que materiau vivant indefiniment malleable (comme le redoute Michael J. Sandel). C’est pourquoi, dans une ethique liberale soucieuse de concilier les libertes individuelles, la question du corps propre, envisagee selon le principe d’autonomie, et celle du corps d’autrui, auquel doit s’appliquer le principe de non-nuisance, appellent chacune un traitement specifique.
