Mitwirkung von unten ist in allen Epochen der Geschichte zu finden. Der transepochale Zugriff des Bandes verdeutlicht die Pluralitat individueller und kollektiver Mitwirkungsmoglichkeiten.

The question of participation from the bottom up is addressed in this book, drawing upon a wide range of subjects from ancient history, through the Middle Ages and the early modern period, to the history of the 20th century. This allows for a trans epochal, multi-perspective and methodically broad view of a phenomenon that plays a major role in other fields of science. The book’s primary focus is on the historical perspective of diverse enforcement mechanisms and political participation, with a focus on bottom-up processes that aim to develop power to effect change. The objective is to identify ways to more thoroughly explore the potential of these approaches for historical science. The central issue pertains to the consideration of the forms, objectives, and consequences of processes that are predominantly initiated from the bottom upas opposed to the top-down perspectives that have historically dominated historical studies, particularly in the domain of rule or policy enforcement in the broadest sense. In this context, the emphasis on the reciprocity of top-down and bottom-up mechanisms assumes particular significance.
