While constrained to the rational stance imposed by their own public image, throughout the course of the modern age the Benedictine monks of Cassino proved to be firm believers not only in the possibility of miracles, but also in the capacity of certain objects to facilitate their occurrence. But how deep-rooted was the belief that certain objects played a primary role in causing such prodigious events? The present research investigates this central aspect of religious experience in the greatest monastic formation of the modern age: the Cassinese Benedictine Congregation.
