Thomas Mann, winner of the 1929 Nobel Prize for Literature and an early opponent of Nazism, addressed his compatriots from America in 56 radio messages, warning them of the reality of the ongoing war and the dark future that awaited them if they continued to support it. A brilliant polemicist, the German writer’s talent is evident throughout these “Appeals to the Germans,” broadcast from October 1940 to May 10, 1945. The chronicles of the author of Death in Venice and The Magic Mountain, who left Germany in 1933 and lost his nationality three years later, resemble those of a war diary. In scathing phrases “the essential content of the Nazi revolution is bestiality” he chants its horrors and calls on his compatriots to react against the regime, “an abominable system, based on lies, plunder and assassination. Hitler? “A miserable charlatan of history”, Goebbels, “a mouth vomiting lies”, Heydrich “that assassin valet” “who in Germany itself was called the executioner.” Hoping for revolt which will not come he warns his compatriots: “if you march with Hitler, against all odds, until the end, you will grow a vengeance that makes all those who love Germany shudder with horror.”
