Cet ouvrage, qui ouvre la serie de publications du CReA, est loin d’offrir un bilan complet des activites scientifiques des archeologues de l’ULB. Ce n’est pas la son objet. Il se contente de mettre en lumiere quelques chantiers et quelques etudes qui ont beneficie du soutien financier ou technique du CReA au cours des cinq premieres annees de son fonctionnement. Partant, ce livre presente, dans des domaines extremement varies du champ archeologique, un certain nombre de nouvelles donnees qui traduisent les principaux interets d’une equipe de chercheurs, ouverts aux collaborations avec les administrations regionales en charge du Patrimoine et les partenaires etrangers, mais aussi soucieux d’une integration concrete de la recherche a l’enseignement universitaire. Sans compter les operations plus ponctuelles menees en collaboration directe avec les regions, on trouvera ici la presentation de plusieurs chantiers et etudes qui touchent a l’histoire locale, du Neolithique aux epoques recentes, du Hainaut occidental a la Famenne (Blicquy, Chimay, Matagne, Olloy, Han, Sinsin, Eprave). Mais ce livre offre aussi un vaste tour d’horizon des missions archeologiques conduites par le CReA ou en collaboration etroite avec ce Centre dans des regions tres variees du monde (Espagne, Grece, Syrie, Egypte, Niger, Perou), souvent sur des sites majeurs de l’archeologie contemporaine. Enfin, quelques chapitres soulignent l’implication du CReA dans des recherches plus thematiques (ceramologie) ou dans des disciplines aujourd’hui indissociables de l’enquete archeologique proprement dite (paleoenvironnement ou imagerie virtuelle).
