Cette grammaire linguistique du hindi aborde tous les niveaux de la langue, de la phonetique et de l’ecriture a l’enonciation et au lexique, reservant quatre chapitres sur huit a la morphologie et a la syntaxe. La construction des categories syntaxiques et lexicales pertinentes a partir du fonctionnement de la langue en assure une description objective, sans toutefois gener la mise en perspective typologique. Parmi les points jusqu’a present peu ou non abordes dans la tradition linguistique et grammaticale du hindi, la thematisation, la focalisation, le role argumentatif et enonciatif des particules, la negation et sa portee, les rapports entre coordination, correlation et subordination. L’ouvrage consacre egalement un chapitre a l’histoire culturelle et politique du hindi (et de l’ourdou), et fait une place importante a la diachronie et aux contacts (notamment avec les langues dravidiennes et munda).
