Cette grammaire se veut un compromis entre le respect des specificites du faka’uvea/wallisien, langue polynesienne parlee a ‘Uvea/Wallis et en Nouvelle-Caledonie par environ 20000 locuteurs, et le desir de la voir enseignee aux cotes du francais, langue du systeme educatif. Le faka’uvea est l’une des 75 langues appartenant au patrimoine linguistique de la France, elle doit etre sauvegardee afin d’assurer la transmission des traditions culturelles wallisiennes. Parmi les caracteristiques qui distinguent le faka’uvea du francais, citons une grande flexibilite fonctionnelle (omnipredicativite et omnisubsctantivite) malgre de nombreux procedes de derivation, l’absence de verbes etre et avoir, l’existence de differents types de possession, de classificateurs nominaux et numeraux, une structure actancielle scindee (accusative et ergative) selon les classes de verbes, un systeme pronominal tres riche, l’emploi frequent de constructions nominalisees, etc. Au cours de son histoire, le faka’uvea a ete influence par le tongien dont il partage l’accent dit de definitude et le maintien d’un registre honorifique, lie a une structure sociale tres hierarchisee avec a sa tete le Lavelua, porteur du titre le plus eleve.
