So einfach und modern Morphologie und Syntax des Hethitischen erscheinen, so komplex und problematisch zeigt sich dessen schriftliche Fixierung. Der Zeichenbestand des hethitischen Syllabars ist zwar relativ uberschaubar, aber die hochfrequente Verwendung von Logogrammen stellt nicht nur den Sprachwissenschaftler vor erhebliche Probleme. Das Phanomen der Verwendung von Logogrammen wurde von der Hethitologie und der Vergleichenden Sprachwissenschaft zur Kenntnis genommen und, zumeist in knapper Form, beschrieben. Henning Marquardt legt nun erstmals eine systematische Untersuchung vor, die sich der Frage zuwendet, warum die hethitischen Schreiber manche Worter phonetisch schrieben, andere logographisch oder auch beide Darstellungsmoglichkeiten nebeneinander benutzten und welches die Ausloser fur diese Verfahren sind. Dabei arbeitet Marquardt zwei hinsichtlich der Motivation fur die Maskierung hethitischer Worter mittels Logogrammen entscheidende Faktoren heraus: Tachygraphie und das Streben nach Vereinfachung.
