English summary: The economy of the ancient world stands in the center of interest of the scholarship of ancient history. Although for decades, quantitative and qualitative judgments about business in the ancient world have been fiercely debated, the scholarly literature does not often make a clear distinction between business and distribution. In order to bring together the analysis of the ancient textual materials from the Mediterranean area with those from the Near East, an interdisciplinary conference was held in April 2013 in Marburg, whose chief theme was examples of the business and distribution of textiles from the 2nd millennium B.C. into the early second millennium A.D. Textiles are well suited to provide a glimpse into the functions of ancient goods exchange and there already exists in many disciplines research concerning the business and distribution of textiles, although these studies are often set within a very narrow field of study that do not connect with other, similar studies. This anthology, which is derived from the proceedings of the conference, unifies the analysis of internal experts from various disciplines: ancient history, ancient Near Eastern studies, archaeology, textile studies and the sciences provide analytical and methodological framework. Already the new approach, to compare documentary sources with archaeological finds and the analytical methods from natural sciences, allow a far-reaching view into the workings of ancient distribution of goods, and provides at the same time information about the “who, how and why.” Beyond sales and acquisition, prices of the goods, and the involved actors and institutions, this reader offers decisive information about goods exchange in a narrow sense. German description: Die Wirtschaft der antiken Welt steht zunehmend im Mittelpunkt des Interesses der althistorischen Forschung. Obwohl seit Jahrzehnten vor allem um die quantitative wie qualitative Beurteilung des Handels in der Antike erbittert gerungen wird, wird in der Forschungsliteratur haufig nicht scharf zwischen Handel und Distribution differenziert. Um die Auswertung des antiken Quellenmaterials aus dem Mittelmeerraum mit dem aus dem Vorderen Orient zu verbinden, fand im April 2013 in Marburg eine interdisziplinare Tagung statt, die sich der Thematik am Beispiel des Handels und der Distribution von Textilien vom 2. Jahrtausend v.Chr. bis ins fruhe 2. Jahrtausend n.Chr. widmete. Textilien eignen sich in besonderer Weise dazu, Einblicke in die Funktionsweise des antiken Warenaustauschs zu erhalten. Zwar gibt es bereits in vielen Disziplinen Forschungen zu Handel und Distribution von Textilien, aber diese werden haufig uber die jeweiligen Fachergrenzen hinaus nicht wahrgenommen. Der zur Tagung gehorige Sammelband vereint daher Analysen internationaler Expertinnen und Experten aus unterschiedlichen Fachdisziplinen: Alte Geschichte, Altorientalistik, Archaologie, Textilforschung und Naturwissenschaften bilden den analytisch-methodischen Rahmen. Gerade der neuere Ansatz, dokumentarische Quellen mit archaologischen Funden und naturwissenschaftlichen Analysemethoden zu verknupfen, erlaubt einen tief greifenden Einblick in die Funktionsweise antiker Warendistribution, der Auskunft uber das “Wer?”, das “Wie?” und das “Warum?” gleichermassen gibt. Uberlegungen zu Absatz- und Beschaffungsmarkten, Warenpreisen und involvierten Akteuren (Institutionen) geben zudem entscheidende Informationen uber den Warenaustausch im engeren Sinne hinaus.
