by Lajos Berkes
English summary: The study offer the first systematic analysis of the village governance and the structure of village society in Egypt in Late Antiquity (4th to 8th century CE), the basis for which rests on more than a thousand newly recovered papyrus documents written in various languages, such as Greek, Coptic, and even Arabic. One particular challenge to research has been the age old problem of clear terminology with regards to official titles and office names in the villages, and the analysis of these micro-philological terms takes up the largest part of this book. On the basis of this understanding, the research offers a comprehensive perspective on local administration and society in the period of transition from Byzantine to Arabian rule, which shows the administrative structure of villages operated on a relatively unified basis, while regionally shaped tendencies nevertheless existed. This study shows that, in contrast to earlier views, Egypt in the period of Late Antiquity was characterized by strong, self-assertive villages. A comparison of the Egyptian evidence with different sources from Palestine, Syria, and Anatolia suggests that villages in the eastern Mediterranean area in Late Antiquity were organized through similar principles. This work was honored with the Philippika Prize by Harrassowitz Verlag as well as the Ruprecht-Karls and Dr. Gerhard Ott Prize of the University of Heidelberg.
