English summary: The Library of Duke Johann Albrecht I. of Mecklenburg (1525-1576), founded in the residence of Schwerin in the second half of the 16th century and nowadays held by Rostock University Library, is of particular interest for research on the Renaissance, humanism and the Reformation. 3,819 volumes containing 5,044 works, including 38 manuscripts and 12 incunabula, bear witness of the Duke’s intention to create a book collection that was meant to gather together the knowledge of the time as widely as possible. This impressive ducal collection has now been surveyed by Nilufer Kruger in three volumes and made accessible with the help of an extensive introduction, comprehensive indices and forty colored charts.
