Regensburg ist ein besonderer Ort der deutschen Reformationsgeschichte. In dieser Stadt verlief der Konfessionswechsel 1542 ohne grossere Unruhen ab. Die Burgerschaft verstand es, sich in den kirchenpolitischen Auseinandersetzungen des 16. Jahrhunderts diplomatisch geschickt abzusichern. Das Hochstift Regensburg und die Reichskloster konnten innerhalb der Stadtmauern ihren Status behalten und so waren beide Konfessionen prominent vertreten. Wegen dieses “okumenischen” Prinzips wurde Regensburg ab dem Jahr 1663 zum Ort des immerwahrenden Reichstags. Noch Papst Benedikt XVI. nannte sein ihm sehr vertrautes Regensburg die “Stadt der Okumene”. Heute markieren die vier Stadte Ansbach, Dinkelsbuhl, Feuchtwangen und Rothenburg eine touristisch attraktive Landschaft, die sich trotz schwieriger Vergangenheit und neuer Herausforderungen noch von christlicher Kultur und kirchlicher Kunst gepragt zeigt. Es ist reizvoll, entlang der “Romantischen Strasse”, in Westmittelfranken der “bewahrenden Kraft des Luthertums” von der Reformation bis in die Gegenwart nachzuspuren.
