This volume presents 54 names of the Hebrew Bible (including the chapters in Aramaic) which can be derived from Iranian languages. Also 17 other names are included in the book, which do not have an Iranian etymology, but they had been interpreted as Iranian in previous research. This new reference work of Iranian names in the Bible can fully replace the treatment of these names given by Ferdinand Justi’s Iranisches Namenbuch (1895) and by Isidor Scheftelowitz (Arisches im Alten Testament I, Konigsberg 1901) which are – though outdated in many cases – still frequently quoted in Biblical studies. For all 71 names the Biblical references and the form of the name in the Septuaginta are given, followed by – mostly short – prosopographical information.

The longest section for each name is the discussion of the etymological interpretation of the name, including also possible derivations from Semitic languages. The book concludes with detailed indices. The volume will be of interest both to specialists in studies of the Hebrew Bible and of Iranian languages.
