Der Band versammelt Aufsatze von Jens Herzer, die in den letzten 20 Jahren im Zuge der Kommentierungsarbeit an den Pastoralbriefen entstanden sind. Sie behandeln neben forschungsgeschichtlichen Problemstellungen insbesondere die Frage der Relation zum Corpus Paulinum bzw. zur Paulustradition. Daruber hinaus wird anhand von Studien zu sprachlichen, inhaltlichen und historischen Aspekten aufgezeigt, dass das seit dem 19. Jh. etablierte Paradigma eines pseudonymen literarischen Corpus Pastorale nicht haltbar ist. Was die Pastoralbriefe sind und welche Absicht sie verfolgen, erschliesst sich nicht durch ihre Interpretation als ein konzeptionelles literarisches Werk, sondern aus dem je spezifischen Profil der einzelnen Briefe. Eine solche individuelle Betrachtung ermoglicht sowohl eine neue Bewertung der Verfasserfrage wie auch eine prazisere Verortung der Einzelschriften in der paulinischen Missionsgeschichte (Tit, 2Tim) bzw. in der Geschichte paulinisch gepragter Gemeinden des 2. Jh. (1Tim).
