Indonesia today is the biggest Islamic country in the world. Yet the Hindu-Buddhist legacy is still present not only through the impressive temple ruins of Prambanan and Borobudur but also in the living religion on Bali. In addition the primal religions of various tribes have survived in the islands. Volker Kuster explores how Christian artists in Bali, Java and Papua respond to these influences. After independence in 1949 the five principles of the Pancasila constitution were supposed to regulate the cultural-religious pluralism of the island nation, including believe in one God. The effects of growing fundamentalism in the Islamic world but also in Hinduism keep disrupting peace and leave their impression behind on the images.
