Since the end of the 1980s, Russian Germans have been one of the largest immigrant groups in the Federal Republic of Germany. Their reception and integration are receiving considerable attention, although reservations against the ethnic Germans from the former USSR have increased particularly recently. Information is urgently needed on the highly complex interrelationship between the position of Russian Germans in the multi-ethnic Soviet Union, their ethnic identity, migration movements due to economic difficulties and ethnic conflicts, and their integration into the unfamiliar society of the Federal Republic of Germany. Based on the assumption that the situation in the country of origin significantly determines the integration of Russian Germans in the Federal Republic, this volume examines the living conditions of Russian Germans in the (former) Soviet Union and considers the basis of their ethnic identity. Against the backdrop of the migration of numerous Russian Germans to the Federal Republic, it examines their conditions and problems of integration. The results of this study suggest that the socialization of Russian-German repatriates in Soviet society makes their integration in the Federal Republic of Germany almost as difficult as that of other immigrant groups.
