"Review - English ""Though starting with volume 1, the annual Zeitschrift fur Archaologie Aussereuropaischer Kulturen ( ZAAK) is a well-established journal, formerly known as Beitrage zur Allgemeinen und Vergleichenden Archaologie. Founded in 1979, the organ of the Kommission fur Archaologie Aussereuropaischer Kulturen, a branch of the Deutsches Archaologisches Institut (DAI), is devoted to research principally in pre-colonial Asia, Africa and the Americas. The new title reflects a change in perception after 25 years, no longer afraid that the term 'Non-European' represents a Eurocentric viewpoint; quite the opposite, the journal celebrates autonomy and multiplicity in the cultures it studies (editorial, p. 6). With the establishmentof an international editorial board and peer-review, the journal will continue to report on the DAI's Non-European projects, but will seek to promote more actively international discussion. Volume 1 of the ZAAK lives up to expectations: this hardbackof just over 300 pages with good quality graphics contains 10 articles (3 each in German and Spanish, 4 in English) on aspects of material culture in China, Mongolia, India and Cambodia, burials in Peru and Bolivia and a study of Recuay sculpturein the Peruvian Andes. A multilingual publication is a welcome sight, but it may be a good idea, in future, to add summaries in the journal's other languages and adopt a more consistent policy towards translating captions (only some are translated intoGerman). Volume 1 ends with a report on the DAI's 2005 activities in southern Peru, Bolivia, the Moroccan Rif, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, and the palace of Karakorum in Mongolia.
