Yaksagana ist die Bezeichnung einer Text- und Auffuhrungstradition in Sudindien, die unterschiedliche regionale Auspragungen umfasst. Im Mittelpunkt von Katrin Fischers Untersuchung steht das Yaksagana-Tanztheater der Kustenregion Karnatakas, das sich auch in der Gegenwart noch grosser Popularitat erfreut. Eine einleitende Studie setzt sich kritisch mit den Quellen zur Geschichte des Kannada-sprachigen Yaksagana auseinander und behandelt eingehend die konstituierenden Elemente Text, Musik, Tanz, schauspielerische Darstellung, Dialogimprovisation, Kostume und Schminkmasken. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt der Frage nach der gesellschaftlichen und kulturellen Verortung, sowie nach dem religiosen Kontext. Auf die Untersuchung folgt eine Ubersetzung des Stucks Abhimanyus Kampf (Abhimanyu Kalaga), die erste vollstandige Ubersetzung eines Yaksagana-Textes in eine europaische Sprache. Das Stuck wird dem Devidasa zugeschrieben und lasst sich in die zweite Halfte des 16. Jahrhunderts datieren. Die Einleitung enthalt auch Hinweise zur performativen Umsetzung des Stoffs. Beigefugt ist der Kannada-Originaltext in Umschrift und ein Vergleich mit der Vorlage Karnatabharatakathamanjari, einer mittelalterlichen Kannada-Bearbeitung des Sanskrit-Mahabharata. Ein Glossar erklart das wichtigste Yaksagana-Vokabular.
