Leitend ist die Frage, inwiefern der Mensch angesichts der vielfachen Bedingtheiten des Daseins uber sich und sein Leben selbst bestimmen kann. Die in der griechischen Mythologie, der Bibel und der Philosophie, besonders in der Stoa, entwickelten Konzepte von Selbstbestimmung wurden von den fruhchristlichen Philosophen aufgegriffen, die die Freiheit der Entscheidung mit einer Intensitat propagierten, wie das nie zuvor der Fall gewesen war. Bei Origenes mundete die fruhchristliche Freiheitstheorie in eine dynamische Freiheitslehre, in der die Freiheit als Prinzip des Seins fungiert. Das kunftige Nachdenken uber Determinismus und Freiheit fand im Rahmen der solchermassen begrundeten Freiheitsmetaphysik statt.
