English Summary: It was 1300 years ago in 719 that local ruler Waltram designated Otmar abbot of the monastic community located at Gallus’ grave in today’s St. Galle in Switzerland. At a time when monasteries turned into crucial institutions of society, the Alemannic population of the area around Lake Constance found support and refuge at Otmar’s community. Using the bestowals received in return, Otmar made the abbey a center of charity. He aided the poor and established one of the first documented leprosaria in Europe. Furthermore, he paved the way for the growing monastic importance of St. Galle by introducing the Rule of Saint Benedict.
