En 1883, Pierre Loti assiste, du pont de son navire, a la prise des forts de Hue. La France conquiert l’Annam. Le recit de la bataille parait quelques semaines plus tard dans Le Figaro. C’est un scandale. Loti est accuse de discrediter les marins et les soldats francais. Somme d’en interrompre la publication, il est rappele a Paris et sanctionne. Que s’est-il passe ? Le jeune ecrivain a-t-il montre ce qu’on a pris l’habitude de cacher a la guerre : les atrocites, la cruaute, la folie des combattants ? Ou s’est-il laisse emporter par son imagination et ses procedes de romancier ?
