Apres une breve et douloureuse carriere militaire, qui l’amena en Aquitaine mais aussi a Corfou, ou il tomba malade, il se fit surtout remarquer dans le salon du celebre condottiere Messalla, qui rassemblait les poetes bucoliques independants, refractaires a la propagande du nouveau regime instaure par Auguste. On disait de Tibulle qu’il etait melancolicus. Melancolicus introversus, cela va sans dire. Il ecrivait des vers idylliques qui annoncent les quatuors de Schubert et Le Grand Meaulnes. Dans une epoque desenchantee, il revait d’un age d’or.
