Review - French A l'epoque wisigothique et pendant les premiers siecles de la Reconquete , les royaumes catholiques de la peninsule Iberique n'entretiennent guere de relations avec Rome. Il faut attendre Alexandre II (1061-1073) et Gregoire VII (1073-1085) pour que les papes y fassent admettre leur autorite effective. Comment comprendre une telle independance dans des royaumes si preoccupes par la defense de la foi ? S'agit-il d'un refus reflechi de la primaute pontificale ou d'un simple isolement geographique ? Le probleme, jusqu'a present mal pose, est en fait celui d'un decalage entre la theorie - une Chretiente incontestablement romaine - et la pratique ; un paradoxe, unique en Occident, qui ne peut se comprendre sans une reevaluation culturelle de la notion d'autorite et de sa reception.
