English Summary:”Uberwachtes Deutschland” describes and analyzes for the first time the history of the monitoring of postal and telecommunications services in Germany. The author was able to unearth secret documents of the German government and shows that the surveillance activity of the American as well as the West German authorities and intelligence agencies has a long tradition going back to the beginnings of the Federal Republic in the 1950s. The over 60 year span of the cooperation between German and allied services to monitor German communications forms the background to the ongoing affair surrounding the activities of the NSA.
