Il nobile vicentino Filippo Pigafetta (1533-1604), parente del piu famoso Antonio, fu a sua volta instancabile viaggiatore, figura emblematica tra politica, affari e cultura del Cinquecento. Lo seguiamo nelle peregrinazioni che compie nel decennio 1576-1587 tra Suez, Londra, Madrid, Lisbona, Roma, Gerusalemme e Venezia, come esploratore, cartografo, informatore, poligrafo e diplomatico tra il mondo cristiano e quello ottomano. Lo rincorriamo, un’udienza dopo l’altra, per le corti di Filippo II, Elisabetta I, papa Sisto V e Ferdinando I de’ Medici. Fino a scoprirlo, per un momento, perno di una possibile alleanza tra le potenze europee per il controllo dell’Egitto, in vista dell’apertura di un canale a Suez per il transito del pepe indiano dal Mar Rosso al Mediterraneo.
