Paulus gilt als der Heidenmissionar im Urchristentum schlechthin. Aber Paulus war kein Einzelkampfer. Er hatte eine Vielzahl von Mitarbeitern, von denen die bedeutendsten Timotheus und Titus waren. In diesem Buch wird dargestellt, wie ihre Tatigkeit und Verantwortung aussah: Im Auftrag des Paulus haben sie von Paulus gegrundete Gemeinden besucht – haben Briefe uberbracht, in Streitigkeiten vermittelt und in Vollmacht des Paulus Weisungen weitergegeben. Drei Briefe aus der Zeit nach Paulus sind diesen beiden Personen gewidmet (zwei Briefe an Timotheus, einer an Titus) und drucken damit die Bedeutung aus, die sie fur die weitere Uberlieferung der paulinischen Verkundigung gespielt haben. Die Nachwirkung der beiden ist aber noch umfangreicher: ihre Tatigkeit (als Bischofe in Ephesus und auf Kreta) wird in Legenden dargestellt, sie wirken in literarischen Werken nach, ihre sterblichen Uberreste (Reliquien) haben z.T. eine dramatische Geschichte und bis heute Bedeutung (Termoli/Italien und Kreta), als Heiligen und Patronen werden ihnen noch heute Kirchen gewidmet.
