Recherches sur la fiscalité en Égypte romaine (Ostraca de Strasbourg II)

Des quelque 2 000 ostraca grecs conserves a la Bibliotheque Nationale et Universitaire de Strasbourg, une petite moitie fut publiee par P. Viereck en 1923 (O. Stras. I). Ce deuxieme volume (O. Stras. II) en presente pres d’une centaine, essentiellement des recus d’impots, qui furent emis a Thebes entre 81 et 216 ap. J.-C. Souvent negliges en raison de leur caractere repetitif, ils ne prennent tout leur sens qu’une fois mis en serie, grace a une reflexion sur la maniere dont ils nous sont parvenus. Avec le renfort d’ostraca issus d’autres collections (comme le Royal Ontario Museum et la Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana), ils permettent de constituer trois dossiers coherents. Le premier reunit des ostraca provenant du district de l’Ophieon (Luxor). Il alimente une reflexion sur la topographie administrative de la ville de Thebes a l’epoque romaine. Le deuxieme dossier rassemble les archives personnelles d’un certain Psais fils de Senphthoumonthes : il permet de suivre un simple contribuable pendant plus de 15 ans et donne de precieuses informations non seulement sur l’homme et ses impots, mais aussi sur les receveurs auxquels il eut affaire. Le dernier ensemble donne a voir, sur plusieurs generations, la famille de Petekhespokhrates fils de Khabonkhonsis, grace a plus de quarante textes ou le grec et le demotique se combinent pour suggerer son appartenance au milieu clerical. Le volume se conclut par une prosopographie des receveurs thebains responsables des impots en argent. Les textes edites ici s’adressent en premier lieu aux papyrologues et aux philologues, tant dans le domaine du grec ancien que du demotique. L’ouvrage interessera aussi les historiens curieux de la fiscalite et de l’economie anciennes.
