It would be both wrong and dubious to address issues of roots and origins without reservation.
These issues evoke the notion of absolute beginnings, which is a matter of metaphysics rather than of history and philology.
By “roots” in this connection, however, I merely refer to conditions that cannot be made explicit without the aid of comparative evidence.
Instead of being regarded as something absolute, beginnings and origins could also be understood as the current closure of historical vision and as points of subdivision in a genealogical ramification.
