“Teichos,” wall, is the most general term in Greek for defensive walls of all kinds and is therefore best suited to cover the range of fortifications and defensive structures discussed in this volume, from the Neolithic to the Ottoman period. In all epochs, defensive fortifications have not only shaped the soft landscape of cities and landscapes, but also, to a considerable extent, the lives of people – politically, economically, and socially. However, the study of prehistoric, ancient and medieval fortifications has not kept pace with that of settlements. As a result, the dating and function of even well-preserved fortifications are often poorly understood. This is also true for Attica, this in many senses “central” cultural landscape. On the basis of a critical examination of the older literature and supported by his own field research, in which even the most remote fortifications threatened by progressive destruction were investigated, Hans Lohmann draws up a survey-like interim balance and not only sketches a new overall picture of Attic fortifications from the Late Neolithic or Chalcolithic to modern times, but also develops general criteria for distinguishing the various groups of monuments.
“Teichos”, Mauer, ist im Griechischen der allgemeinste Begriff fur Wehrmauern aller Art und daher am besten geeignet, die Bandbreite der in diesem Band behandelten Befestigungen und Wehranlagen vom Neolithikum bis in die osmanische Zeit abzudecken. Verteidigungsanlagen haben in allen Epochen nicht nur das Weichbild von Stadten und Landschaften gepragt, sondern in erheblichem Maae auch das Leben der Menschen – politisch, okonomisch und sozial. Doch hat die Erforschung prahistorischer, antiker und mittelalterlicher Befestigungen nicht mit jener von Siedlungen Schritt gehalten. Daher sind Datierung und Funktion selbst gut erhaltener Wehranlagen oft nur unzureichend geklart. Dies gilt auch fur Attika, diese in mehrfachem Sinne “zentrale” Kulturlandschaft. Auf der Grundlage einer kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit der alteren Fachliteratur und gestutzt auf eigene Feldforschungen, bei denen selbst entlegenste und von voranschreitender Zerstorung bedrohte Wehranlagen untersucht wurden, zieht Hans Lohmann eine uberblicksartige Zwischenbilanz und entwirft nicht nur ein neues Gesamtbild des attischen Festungswesens vom Endneolithikum bzw. Chalkolithikum bis in die Neuzeit, sondern entwickelt auch allgemeine Kriterien zur Unterscheidung der verschiedenen Denkmalergruppen.
