De sa naissance aux Ides de Mars 44, la vie de Cesar tient du roman. Elle est a tout coup l’une des plus belles pages de l’Antiquite. Elle devient sous la plume de Suetone un recit enleve, passionnant, riche en anecdotes et parfois en critiques. Charmant, jeune, trainant tous les coeurs apres soi , le vers de Racine s’applique parfaitement a l’image que nous avons d’Auguste. Le portrait qu’en donne Suetone est plus sombre: derriere le jeune homme se profile, le tyran ou l’empereur, selon les points de vue : fin lettre, Octave, plus tard Auguste, etait un pietre soldat, et son genie militaire et politique n’obere ni la lachete, ni la cruaute qu’ose preter Suetone au grand homme. Malgre un penchant prononce pour la petite histoire, le texte de Suetone est un chef-d’oeuvre de vivacite et de veracite.
