Die Beitrage des Bands spannen einen weiten Bogen von Konzepten fruhneuzeitlicher Ideal- und Planstadte bis zu Visionen von der Stadt der Zukunft. Sie beschaftigen sich u.a. mit Ideal- und Planstadten im deutschen Sudwesten, mit der “kleinen Stadt” im Umbruch zur Moderne, dem rechtlichen Rahmen der kommunalen Infrastrukturplanung im 19. Jahrhundert sowie dem urbanistisches Prestigeprojekt der DDR Halle-Neustadt. Das Spannungsfeld zwischen Globalisierung und der Betonung lokaler Identitaten, die Probleme sozialer Segregation sowie die Vision einer humanen Stadt, in der gesellschaftliche Funktionalitat und individuelle Wunsche vereinbar werden, verweisen auf gegenwartige und kunftige Herausforderungen.
