Notions of dying and death are gender specific. Even the grammatical gender of ‘death’, ‘thanatos’, ‘mors’ differs in ancient and present languages. Cultures and religions assign certain forms of death, such as suicide, according to gender criteria. Also practical attitudes to and experiences of death and dying are by no means the same for men and women, both for biological reasons (pregnancy, birth and death have always been intertwined), and also for reasons of social and cultural attribution. A public conference held at the Theological Faculty of Bern in May 2013 addressed the gender components of death. The six papers presented – complemented by brief research overviews from the theological disciplines – are published in this volume. The seminar marks the launch of a research project on death and gender which is set to run for several years and which for the first time addresses the question of gender in dying and death based on an interdisciplinary approach.

Kulturen und Religionen kodieren bestimmte Todesarten, wie zum Beispiel Suizid, geschlechtsabhangig. Aber auch die konkreten Einstellungen zu und Erfahrungen mit Sterben und Tod sind fur Manner und Frauen durchaus nicht gleich, wofur es Ursachen in der Biologie gibt (Schwangerschaft, Geburt und Tod waren und sind miteinander verflochten), aber auch in sozialen und kulturellen Zuweisungen.Mit diesen Genderkomponenten des Todes hat sich eine offentliche Tagung an der Theologischen Fakultat Bern im Mai 2013 beschaftigt, deren sechs Beitrage – erweitert um kurze Forschungsuberblicke aus den theologischen Disziplinen – hier dokumentiert werden. Der Studientag markiert den Auftakt zu einem mehrjahrigen Forschungsprojekt zu Tod und Gender, das erstmalig und interdisziplinar der Frage nach dem Gendervorzeichen von Sterben und Tod nachgeht.
