It is this methodological effort that is analyzed in this volume. French text. French description: L’un des traits constants de la pensee de Rousseau reside dans la meditation qu’il poursuit jusqu’a la fin de sa vie sur l’amour de soi – sur l’affection essentielle de l’etre sensible et intelligent. Mais les ressources mobilisees dans cette entreprise ne demeurent pas les memes tout au long de l’oeuvre et elles se forgent avant tout dans un effort d’appropriation puis de mise a distance de la philosophie de son temps. C’est cet effort methodologique qui est analyse dans le present ouvrage. Du Discours sur l’origine et les fondements de l’inegalite a l’Emile, Rousseau perfectionne un empirisme qui confere son caractere systematique a la theorie de l’homme mais qui, a terme, revele ses limites dans l’examen des idees sublimes (l’ordre du monde voulu par Dieu, l’existence de l’ame) que l’homme moderne doit prendre en vue. Aussi importe-t-il de comprendre de quelle facon Rousseau abandonne cette perspective au long des recherches qui, en 1778, aboutissent a l’oeuvre ultime achevee au seuil de la mort : Les Reveries du promeneur solitaire. Le cheminement que l’on peut retracer en suivant la voie royale de la methode decouvre une derniere philosophie de Rousseau, ou la clarification d’experiences decisives (l’accident, la reverie) se substitue au style philosophique de l’epoque pour decouvrir les conditions d’un bonheur effectif.
