With the exception of Sicily, the islands of the Mediterranean are only touched upon in passing in modern studies of the Roman Empire. This book, aimed at a wide readership, fills this gap by examining, on the basis of the sources, how the islands of the Mediterranean came to the Romans’ attention and what became of them within the Roman Empire.
