Review - French Plus encore que d'autres peuples du Haut Moyen Age, les Anglo-Saxons furent fascines par Rome. Certains de leurs rois ont tente d'imiter les empereurs romains, et surtout les grands auteurs , Aldhelm, Boniface, Bede, firent de la maitrise de la culture antique un element essentiel dans la definition de l'identite anglo-saxonne aux VIIet VIIIsiecles. Apres les raids vikings du IXsiecle, toutefois, avec la promotion du vieil-anglais au rang de langue litteraire et la redecouverte du passe anglo-saxon, cette symbolique romaine perdit de la pertinence, a l'inverse de ce qui se passait sur le continent. L'analyse de ce phenomene permet ainsi de mieux comprendre la specificite de la culture anglo-saxonne dans la longue duree.
