Das Buch geht der Frage nach, wann in der Reichsstadt Speyer der Prozess der offiziellen Einfuhrung der Reformation und der evangelischen Konfessionsbildung einsetzte und wie bzw. uber welche Wege und Formen er sich vollzog. Der Untersuchungszeitraum deckt die Jahre 1538 bis 1580 ab. Auf der Grundlage einer intensiven Auswertung der verfugbaren archivalischen und gedruckten Quellen kommt die Studie – die bisherigen Forschungen korrigierend – zu ganz neuen Ergebnissen. Durch die Beigabe einer Edition der archivalischen Quellen setzt das Buch Massstabe auf dem Feld der Forschungen zur Einfuhrung der Reformation.
